Facts and myths

Laser It affects the skin. It is therefore hardly surprising that questions about its safety arise before the first treatment. This is particularly true when it comes to a procedure that is carried out regularly and on different parts of the body.

One of the most common concerns relates to cancer: Is laser hair removal carcinogenic?

This question is worth taking seriously, but the answer does not require us to create an atmosphere of fear surrounding lasers. The most important thing is to distinguish between different types of radiation and to understand exactly how a laser used for hair removal works.

Around laser depilation There are quite a few myths circulating. Some of them stem from a simple association: since a laser emits radiation and affects tissue, it may also damage DNA. However, the mechanism behind the treatment is different.

Laser radiation and cancer

Laser The device used for hair removal emits light at a specific wavelength. The energy is absorbed primarily by the melanin present in the hair and hair follicle. It is then converted into heat, which damages the structures responsible for hair growth.

This is non-ionising radiation. There is therefore no mechanism such as ionising radiation, the energy of which can lead to changes in the structure of DNA.

Another distinction is just as important. Laser light The light used for hair removal is not the same as UV radiation. It is precisely chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation is one of the key factors that increase the risk of skin cancer.

Can laser hair removal cause cancer?

Based on current knowledge, there is no evidence to suggest that, when performed correctly, laser depilation causes skin cancer.

Laser dIt works by means of a thermal effect within the hair follicle. Its purpose is not to alter the genetic material of skin cells. Therefore, the light used in hair removal cannot be equated with radiation that can damage DNA.

However, this does not mean that the treatment is entirely risk-free. As the laser delivers energy to the skin, it may cause a local reaction. Factors such as skin phototype, hair colour, the degree of tanning, the parameters used and the way the treatment is carried out all play a role.

That is precisely why safety of laser hair removal It depends not only on the technology itself. Correct eligibility for the procedure is equally important.

IPL and laser – two different methods

The following also frequently comes up in discussions about security: IPL. Although both IPL and lasers use light energy, they are not the same thing.

IPL emits a broad spectrum of light, whilst a laser uses a specific wavelength. They therefore differ in terms of how they work, their specifications and their applications.

For this reason, the term „IPL rays” should not be used interchangeably with laser radiation. When assessing the safety of a particular treatment, the most important factors are the type of technology used, the device’s parameters and the way in which it is used.

Laser hair removal and birthmarks and skin lesions

Melanin is one of the main elements to which the energy used during hair removal reacts. That is why moles and other skin lesions those located within the treatment area require special attention.

A worrying mole should not simply be overlooked during treatment. If the mole is new, or if it changes shape, colour or size, it should first be assessed by a doctor.

Laser depilation It is not intended for diagnosing skin lesions. If you have any doubts, it is wiser to clarify them first and only then resume planning your hair removal.

How does a laser affect the skin?

During the treatment, the light is absorbed by melanin and converted into heat. The aim is to deliver the right amount of energy to the hair follicle, whilst minimising its impact on the surrounding tissues.

However, the skin may react. After the treatment, there is often slight redness, swelling around the hair follicles or a sensation of warmth. These reactions are usually short-lived.

Blisters, scabs or pigmentation changes may occur less frequently. The risk increases, amongst other things, when the treatment is carried out on recently tanned skin or when the settings are not correctly adjusted.

That is why the question Is laser hair removal safe for the skin? It only makes sense if we take the whole process into account – from assessment through to the selection of parameters and post-treatment care.

Side effects of laser hair removal

Mild and temporary reactions are the most common. The skin may be red, slightly swollen or more sensitive immediately after the treatment. A burning sensation or a feeling of warmth may also occur.

Less common reactions include blisters, scabs and pigmentation disorders – both hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. These are usually linked to the skin’s reaction to light energy and require appropriate treatment.

It is therefore worth discussing the possible side effects of depilatory laser, particularly if the skin is sensitive, tanned or has numerous lesions.

When is it best to postpone laser hair removal?

Not every skin type is ready for the treatment on the day of the consultation.

A recent tan, an active infection or inflammation at the treatment site are situations in which hair removal should be postponed. Taking medicines or substances that increase the skin’s sensitivity to light may also be a factor.

Before the procedure, you should also bear in mind that birthmarks and other pigmentary changes. If these require assessment by a dermatologist, this should be carried out first.

Contraindications or situations requiring individual assessment may also include pregnancy, certain skin conditions, active infections and specific chronic conditions. The final decision should always take into account the patient’s current condition and the nature of the planned procedure.

Laser radiation and health – what really matters?

If you are worried that The radiation emitted during laser hair removal is dangerous, one thing is key: it should not be confused with UV radiation or ionising radiation.

The light used in hair removal is intended to act locally and thermally. It is not used to cause changes to the DNA of cells.

However, the safety of the procedure depends on a much wider range of factors. What matters is having the right equipment, its specifications, the experience of the person performing the procedure, the preparation of the skin, and proper patient selection.

The mere fact that the device uses a laser is neither a guarantee of safety nor a cause for concern. What matters is how it is used.

Safety begins before the procedure

A good treatment begins even before the laser is applied to the skin. It is necessary to assess the phototype, the colour and texture of the hair, the condition of the skin, and the presence of moles and other lesions. Information should also be gathered about any medication, sun exposure and previous skin reactions to treatments.

It is only on this basis that the appropriate parameters for a particular person can be selected.

It is this stage that often determines whether laser depilation It will not only be effective, but also well tolerated by the skin.

Scientific research – laser hair removal

Dermatologists in their opinions o laser depilation are unequivocal in recognising this method as effective and safe. On the basis of a long-term study, they analysed long-term effects of depilation, finding no connection with skin cancer. Here are the conclusions drawn from these analyses:

Lasers used for depilation emit light in the infrared or red spectrum, which is absorbed by melanin and does not have sufficient energy to ionise atoms in human body cells, which is necessary to induce DNA mutation.

Melanoma and hair removal – Hair removal lasers are not associated with the development of melanoma or other skin cancers. Furthermore, in some cases, laser hair removal can facilitate the early detection of pigmented lesions, as the absence of hair makes it easier to check moles regularly.

It is believed that myth o laser depilation and its carcinogenicity stems from confusing laser radiation with UV radiation, which is actually harmful.

Wellclinic expert opinion

"I am often asked about the alleged harmfulness of laser hair removal and its link to cancer. As a dermatologist with many years of experience, I can state with full conviction: this is a myth. The lasers we use at Wellclinic are medically certified and only work on the hair pigment, i.e. melanin. Their energy is too low to damage the DNA of skin cells, which is a prerequisite for the formation of cancer. UV radiation, from the sun or tanning beds, is a completely different story - and it is this that is the risk factor for skin cancer. Laser hair removal, carried out by a qualified professional, is a safe and effective treatment that allows you to enjoy smooth skin without health concerns. What's more, with hair removal, it is easier to monitor the condition of the marks on the skin, which promotes early detection of any worrying changes. We, as a Medical Team, always focus on educating and dispelling any doubts our patients may have, so they can make informed and safe decisions about their appearance and health."

Is laser hair removal safe?

If you’re asking Is laser hair removal carcinogenic?, current medical knowledge does not suggest that treatments carried out correctly increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

However, it is not worth reducing safety to a simple „lasers are harmless”. Any procedure that uses energy to affect tissue can trigger a reaction. In the case of hair removal, this reaction is usually mild and temporary, but side effects cannot be ruled out.

That is why proper preparation and qualifications are more important than simply repeating that the procedure is „100% safe”.

The laser is not a problem in itself. The problem may lie in its incorrect use.

If you have any concerns about moles, medication, sun exposure, your skin type or preparing for the procedure, it is worth discussing them during your consultation. Book a consultation Speak to our beautician and find out whether laser hair removal is the right method for you.

Sources:

PubMed „Adverse Events of Light-Assisted Hair Removal: An Updated Review”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37272371/

PubMed „Changes in melanocytic nevi treated with laser hair removal: A systematic review”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37493510/

PubMed „Laser hair removal: a review”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23332016/

PubMed „Clinical and dermoscopic evaluation of changes in melanocytic nevi during diode laser hair removal: A prospective study”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35670253/

American Academy of Dermatology, „Laser hair removal: FAQs”
https://www.aad.org/public/cosmetic/hair-removal/laser-hair-removal-faqs

Health Canada, „Laser Hair Removal – Safety Guidelines for Facility Owners and Operators”
https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/environmental-workplace-health/reports-publications/radiation/laser-hair-removal-safety-guidelines-facility-owners-operators-health-canada-2011.html

Laser działa na skórę.
