Psoriasis is a skin disease, the underlying cause of which may be chronic or inflammatory. Its main symptom is excessive keratinisation of the epidermis, i.e. flaking and falling off of patches of skin. Characteristic areas for psoriasis vulgaris are the knees, elbows and scalp. The cause of the disease is most often genetic, but immunological problems have also been implicated.
