De-pigmented scars (white scars) are characterised by a low melanin content, making them lighter in colour than the skin. De-pigmented scars are a type of hypertrophic scar which, by producing too much tissue, become hard and protrude above the skin. It is recognised that discoloured scars are the most difficult scars to remove.
