Keloid scars

Keloid scars, also known as keloids, are the result of an abnormal skin healing process following an injury. They develop as a result of excessive collagen production, causing the scar tissue to spread beyond the area of the original skin damage. Keloids usually have a hard, fibrous structure and may take on an irregular or elongated shape. The skin in the affected area may have a bluish-red colour.

Susceptibility to the formation of keloid scars It varies from person to person and can occur even following a minor injury, surgery, a skin puncture or inflammation. Keloids are classified as pathological scars, as their growth extends beyond the area of the original skin damage.

The management of keloids depends, amongst other things, on the size, location and nature of the lesion. Scar removal may require an appropriately tailored treatment plan. In the case of keloids, it is particularly important to consult a specialist, as they tend to recur, and the choice of treatment should take into account the individual nature of the lesion.
