Scars on the legs They are most commonly caused by injuries, wounds and surgical procedures. They may also result from burns, skin inflammation or abnormalities depilation. They often occur on the knees, calves and thighs – areas that are particularly prone to injury.
The appearance of a scar depends, amongst other things, on the type and depth of the skin damage and the healing process. Scars can be flat, atrophic, hypertrophic or take the form of scars. Over time, the scar usually fades and becomes less visible, although it does not always disappear completely.
In the case of extensive, hard or painful lesions, carefully selected treatment methods may be helpful. Depending on the type of scar, treatments such as laser therapy, micro-needling or other procedures that promote tissue remodelling may be used. Further information can be found under the following headings removal of scars on the body, mature scars and scars on the hands.
Large scars or those that heal abnormally may cause pain, itching, skin tightness and restricted mobility. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a specialist, who will assess the type of scar and recommend the appropriate course of action.
