How to care for post-operative scars? 7 tips to help scars disappear.

surgical scars

Post-operative woundand then a fresh scar require special treatment. It is worth following the medical recommendations. With these, unpleasant complications will be avoided and the post-operative scar will be significantly less visible.

How to care for the scar before the stitches are removed?

  1. Until the sutures are removed (or dissolved) and the surgical wound has healed, it should be cared for with special care. This will avoid complications and the surgical scar itself will be less visible. First and foremost, the wound must be kept clean. Depending on the size and depth of the wound, a sterile dressing should be worn for at least a few days (in the case of a small wound) - this is where airy gauze and ready-to-use drugstore dressings, consisting of an absorbent layer (which absorbs exudate well) and a retaining layer, work well. The dressing must be dry and the wound itself must have access to air. The dressing should be changed according to medical advice, usually once a day, or if it gets dirty or wet. The wound should be washed with an antibacterial preparation.
  2. Until the suture site has healed, it is important to remember not to get the wound wet - instead of lying in the bath, take a quick shower, trying not to direct the water jet at the suture site. The area is wiped with a disposable towel.

How to care for the scar after the stitches have been removed?

  1. Once the stitches have been removed, it is a good idea to start rubbing a skin elasticiser into the area of the forming scar. There are many ointments and gels on the market for treatment of scars of various origins, which soothe the sensation of tightness, itching, make the skin more elastic and prevent overgrowth and scarring. They make scars less visible.
  2. Remember a healthy diet: food rich in vitamins, minerals will help with wound healing. Eat more often, but smaller portions. Drink a minimum of two litres of fluids: water, fruit and herbal teas. The right diet affects the whole body, including regenerating tissues.
  3. The clothing we put on should be airy, made of breathable, natural material and not compressing the wound/scar.
  4. We don't lift heavier things, we don't do intensive sport so that the wound doesn't spreadzła, but we also avoid lying down all the time to prevent adhesions from appearing.
  5. Do not expose the wound to the sun.

What can be done to make a surgical scar disappear?

There are many preparations for scars that reduce the visibility of the mark. One of these is the lubricating BioOil, which (when used regularly) rebuilds the skin structure and reduces the visibility of the mark. However, if scar is large and located in a visible area, it is worth considering treatment with the Er Yag Fotona Dynamis Sp Pro laser. In many cases, 1 to 3 appointments are enough to dramatically shallow the scar, or even make it invisible. The laser light penetrates deep into the skin, damaging collagen cells and stimulating the production of new collagen.
