Blackheads are non-inflammatory pimples that can range from small, white papules to black, characteristic dots. They are primarily an aesthetic problem in people with oily and combination skin, but if left untreated can lead to inflammation and acne lesions. Blackheads are fairly common skin lesions, appearing in areas where multiple sebaceous glands are present. They are most commonly located on the face, in the so-called 'T-zone', which includes the forehead, nose and chin. The eruptions occur due to excessive sebum production and abnormal exfoliation of the epidermis. The result is the clogging of the follicle orifices and the formation of unsightly spots. A visit to a beautician can also help to get rid of blackheads, e.g. manual face cleansing or microdermabrasion. Remember never to remove blackheads yourself. This can lead to an increase in inflammation and the formation of serious, difficult-to-heal pus lesions.
