CO₂ laser – a type of ablative laser used in dermatology, aesthetic medicine and certain surgical procedures. It emits radiation with a wavelength of approximately 10,600 nm, which is strongly absorbed by the water present in the tissues. This enables the precise vaporisation of specific layers of the skin and induces a controlled process of skin remodelling.
In aesthetic medicine, the CO₂ laser is primarily used for skin resurfacing, i.e. treatments aimed at improving its structure and appearance. The indications for its use include, amongst others,. wrinkles, acne and post-traumatic scars, uneven skin texture, sagging skin and enlarged pores. Treatments using this technology may also help to improve skin firmness and smooth the skin’s surface.
CO₂ laser can operate in classic mode or fractional. In fractional laser treatment, the laser beam creates numerous microscopic zones of controlled damage in the skin, leaving areas between them that have not been treated by the laser. This distribution of energy stimulates regenerative processes and skin remodelling whilst preserving the undamaged tissue.
The depth and intensity of the CO₂ laser’s action depend on the parameters used and the type of procedure being performed. Owing to the ablative nature of the technology, treatments may involve a healing period, the duration of which depends on the extent and intensity of the therapy.
