Scarring alopecia This is a severe form of alopecia in which the hair follicles are permanently damaged and replaced by scar tissue. Hair does not grow back in the areas affected by the condition; therefore, early diagnosis is crucial for halting the progression of the condition.

The reason cicatricial alopecia These may include, amongst others, inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, infections, injuries and other factors leading to damage to the hair follicles. Characteristic symptoms include gradual thinning of the hair, enlarging areas of hair loss, redness, flaking, itching, a burning sensation or tenderness of the scalp. In the affected areas, the hair follicle openings may disappear.

Diagnosis requires a consultation with a dermatologist and an assessment of the scalp. The doctor may use, amongst other things, a clinical examination and trichoscopy carried out by trichologist, and in certain cases, a skin biopsy as well. This makes it possible to identify the type of hair loss and determine the appropriate course of treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause and the severity of the condition. Its main aim is to reduce inflammation and prevent further damage to the hair follicles. In the case of follicles that have been completely destroyed and replaced by scar tissue, natural hair regrowth is not possible.
