Shear biopsy This is a diagnostic method involving the removal of a sample from a superficial skin lesion for histopathological examination. The procedure enables the structure of the excised tissue to be assessed and the nature of the lesion to be determined. It is used, amongst other things, in the diagnosis of certain skin diseases and lesions whose appearance requires more detailed microscopic examination.

During a shave biopsy, the doctor removes a sample of the lesion using a surgical scalpel. The sample includes the superficial layers of the skin; therefore, in many cases, the site of the biopsy does not require stitches. The sample is then sent for histopathological examination, which allows the nature of the lesion to be determined more precisely.

A shear biopsy is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and takes a dozen or so minutes. It does not usually require any special preparation on the part of the patient. After the procedure, you should follow the instructions for caring for the site where the sample was taken. A small scar may remain at the biopsy site; its appearance depends, amongst other things, on individual skin characteristics and the healing process.

A shear biopsy can be used to diagnose various skin conditions and skin lesions of an unclear nature. The doctor decides whether the test is necessary based on the appearance of the lesion, its location and other information gathered during the consultation.
