Histopathological examination

Histopathological examination This is a microscopic examination of tissue samples taken from a patient in order to assess their structure and the nature of any lesions found. The samples may be taken during surgery or as part of shear biopsy. The tissue sample is then suitably prepared, stained and examined under a microscope by a pathologist.

Histopathological examination It plays a significant role in the diagnosis of skin and tissue lesions. It enables the nature of the lesion to be assessed, including the diagnosis of neoplastic lesions and determining whether they are benign or malignant. The test result may also assist in the diagnosis of certain inflammatory processes and other abnormalities within the tissue being examined.

Histopathological examination It does not usually require any special preparation. If a sample is to be taken during the procedure, the patient should inform the medical staff of any medicines they are taking, any allergies and any blood clotting disorders they may have. The method of sample collection and the extent of preparation required for the procedure depend on the type of procedure being carried out.

Once the sample has been collected, it is properly preserved and sent to the histopathology laboratory. The waiting time for results depends, amongst other things, on the type and size of the sample taken and the scope of the diagnostic tests. For a standard test, the result is usually available after a few days, whilst a more complex assessment may require additional time.
