Hormonal alopecia This refers to excessive hair loss and thinning associated with hormonal imbalances. The condition of the hair follicles is primarily influenced by androgens, including dihydrotestosterone (DHT), as well as changes in oestrogen levels. One form of hair loss associated with the action of androgens is androgenetic alopecia.

Hormonal imbalances can lead to a gradual weakening, thinning and reduction in hair density. In women, this problem can arise, amongst other things, following pregnancy and during the menopause, when sex hormone levels change. Menopausal alopecia is linked, amongst other things, to a fall in oestrogen levels and a change in the ratio between oestrogens and androgens.

Symptoms hormonal hair loss depend on the underlying cause. They may include gradual thinning of the hair, increased hair loss and a reduction in the diameter of the hair shafts. If a hormonal cause is suspected, it is important to establish the cause, as similar symptoms may also occur in other types of hair loss.

Diagnosis may involve an assessment of the hair and scalp, as well as appropriately selected hormone tests. In women, the scope of investigations depends on their age, the symptoms they are experiencing and their hormonal status. In cases of excessive hair loss, a trichological assessment may also be helpful.

Procedure in the event of hormonal hair loss depends on its cause and the severity of the condition.
