BMI (English:. Body Mass Index) is a body mass index used to provide a rough assessment of the relationship between body weight and height. It is calculated by dividing body weight, expressed in kilograms, by the square of height, expressed in metres.
BMI It is primarily used in adults for an initial assessment of body weight. It is generally accepted that a score below 18.5 may indicate underweight, values between 18.5 and 24.9 fall within the normal weight range, values between 25 and 29.9 indicate being overweight, whilst a score of 30 or above indicates obesity.
When interpreting BMI, it is important to bear in mind that this is an indicative measure. Among other things, it does not take into account body fat percentage, muscle mass, the distribution of body fat or individual body composition. For this reason, a BMI reading on its own should not be regarded as a comprehensive assessment of one’s health or dietary habits.
In the case of children and young people BMI It is interpreted differently than in adults, most commonly using centile charts that take age and gender into account. Nor is the standard interpretation of BMI applicable to pregnant women.
Result BMI It can be one of the factors used to assess nutritional status and a starting point for further consultation with a specialist. Depending on individual needs, it is also possible to develop personalised diet, taking into account health, lifestyle, physical activity and dietary goals.
