Collagen It is the main structural protein of connective tissue in the human body. It is found, amongst other places, in skin, bones, tendons, cartilage and blood vessels, where it provides the tissues with the necessary strength and structural support.
In the skin collagen It forms a network of fibres in the dermis, contributing to its firmness, elasticity and density. Together with elastin and the intercellular matrix, it forms the basis of the dermis’s structure.
Collagen It plays a supportive role in many of the body’s tissues. In the musculoskeletal system, it contributes to the proper functioning of cartilage, tendons and ligaments, whilst in bones it provides a framework for mineralisation processes. In blood vessels, it helps to maintain their normal structure.
Summary collagen occurs primarily in fibroblasts, i.e. the cells of connective tissue responsible, amongst other things, for the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Their activity declines with age, leading to a gradual deterioration in the skin’s structural properties.
With age, natural production collagen gradually decreases, leading to a loss of firmness, elasticity and density in the skin. As a result, the following may appear: wrinkles and other signs of ageing. The rate at which collagen breaks down is also influenced by external factors, primarily UV radiation, smoking, chronic stress, an unhealthy diet and environmental pollution.
There are several types of collagen in the body, of which the following are of particular importance to the skin: type I and III collagen. Type III collagen Together with type I collagen, it helps to maintain the skin’s normal structure and elasticity.
The body’s natural collagen production processes can be supported through proper skincare, sun protection and selected aesthetic medicine treatments designed to fibroblast stimulation and skin remodelling.
