For years, liposuction was primarily associated with extensive surgery and a long recovery period. Techniques are now also available that utilise laser energy, which offer a different approach to body shaping. One of these is laser liposuction.
What the procedure involves, how it feels and how long the recovery takes depend on the technique used and the patient’s individual circumstances. That is why, before making a decision, it is worth knowing, how the various liposuction methods differ, and what to expect before, during and after the procedure.
Surgical liposuction – the procedure and how it feels during the operation
Surgical liposuction involves the mechanical removal of fatty tissue using a thin cannula inserted under the skin. As this is a more invasive procedure, it is carried out under local or general anaesthetic.
During the procedure, the patient should not feel any pain in the conventional sense. Anaesthesia blocks pain signals, but other sensations may occur – pressure, the movement of tissues or a sensation of „work” in the deeper layers of the skin. These are not sharp, but may be noticeable.
The procedure itself is not typically painful, but the manipulation of the tissues causes the body to react in a physical and noticeable way.
After the procedure, the healing process begins. During this time, swelling, tenderness and a feeling of tightness in the skin may occur. This is the body’s natural response to the surgical procedure and is a phase that may last several days or longer, depending on the extent of the procedure.
