Laser hair removal is not carried out, amongst other things, during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding, on freshly tanned skin, or in the event of active skin infections at the treatment site. This applies to viral, bacterial and fungal infections.
The use of medicines and preparations that increase the skin’s sensitivity to light is also important. This group may include certain antibiotics and herbs, such as St John’s wort and calendula. Before your appointment, you must inform the specialist about any medicines and supplements you are taking.
The information on the procedure also lists cancer and vitiligo as contraindications. In case of doubt, the decision as to whether the procedure can be carried out should be made during the assessment.
Preparing for laser hair removal on the underarms
Preparing for the treatment does not involve any complicated steps. The day before, you should shave your underarms with a disposable razor. However, you should not remove hair using wax, an epilator or tweezers, as the hair must be present in the follicle during laser hair removal.
On the day of your appointment, your skin should be clean and dry. Do not apply any antiperspirant, lotion or other cosmetics to your underarms.
You should also avoid sunbathing before the treatment. Skin that has recently been tanned may be a contraindication for the procedure, so you should inform the specialist if you have been exposed to the sun or used a sunbed.
Underarm care after the procedure
After laser hair removal, your skin may be more sensitive. During this time, it is a good idea to avoid anything that might cause further irritation.
For about a week, it is advisable to avoid hot baths, saunas and swimming pools. For a few days, you may use an alcohol-free antiperspirant, which will be gentler on your skin after the treatment.
If the skin reaction is severe, lasts longer than expected or any worrying symptoms appear, you should consult the specialist performing the treatment.
The effects of laser hair removal on the underarms
Hair does not disappear after just one session. Following further treatments, the hair should gradually thin out, and any hair that grows back may be finer and sparser.
The result depends on several factors, including hair colour and thickness, the amount of melanin, and the growth phase the hair is in during the treatment. This is why the results of a course of treatments may vary from person to person.
The regularity of the sessions is also important. The laser primarily targets hairs in the active growth phase, and this phase does not occur simultaneously across the entire underarm hair.
The term „permanent hair removal” should therefore be understood as permanent hair reduction, rather than a guarantee of the complete and permanent removal of every single hair.
