Ozempic or Mounjaro – which one should you choose? A comparison of weight-loss treatments

Ozempic or Mounjaro

You might finally see the number you’ve been longing for on the scales… and yet not recognise your own face in the mirror.

The cheeks lose volume. The temples begin to look sunken. Wrinkles become deeper and the skin loses its firmness. Instead of a fresh, more youthful face, the appearance that emerges is one associated with tiredness and accelerated ageing.

And that is precisely what many people fail to take into account when they start slimming.

You’re focusing on the kilograms. Your doctor is monitoring your weight. Your clothes are getting looser and looser. Everything’s heading in the right direction.

And the face? She’s losing weight too.

During rapid weight loss, the amount of body fat – which previously gave the face volume and provided natural support for the skin – decreases. If the change occurs quickly, the skin may not have time to adapt to the new proportions.

That’s why, after a while, you might notice something you hadn’t expected at all: Her figure looks slimmer, but her face looks older.

It is precisely this phenomenon, referred to in the media and by patients as "Ozempic face" or „Mounjaro face”.

This does not mean that Ozempic or Mounjaro directly „damage” the skin. The problem is more complex. The most important factors are the extent and rate of weight loss, as well as the individual condition of the skin and the amount of fat tissue in the facial area.

The good news? You don’t have to wait until the changes become apparent.

A proactive approach to skin health can begin whilst you are losing weight. This means that the weight-loss process does not have to mean choosing between a slimmer figure and a face that retains a healthy and balanced appearance.

In this article, we compare Ozempic and Mounjaro and we explain why the appearance of the face may change during treatment, what actually causes the loss of facial volume, and how you can support your skin whilst losing weight.

Ozempic or Mounjaro – which one really changes the appearance of the face?

How does Ozempic differ from Mounjaro? Ozempic contains semaglutide, which acts on the receptor GLP-1. Mounjaro includes thirzepatide and acts on two hormonal pathways – GLP-1 and GIP.

Both medicines can aid weight loss, but their mechanisms of action are not identical. From the point of view of facial appearance, however, what is more important than the name of the product itself is how many kilograms are lost and how quickly this happens.

It is precisely the reduction in body fat that can have the greatest impact on the appearance of the face.

This does not mean that the medicine „damages” the skin. The problem is more complex than that.

The fatty tissue located beneath the skin forms part of the face’s natural support structure. When its volume decreases rapidly, the skin and deeper structures must adapt to the new proportions.

Your face can lose weight along with the rest of your body

This is precisely where the problem often referred to as "Ozempic face" or „Mounjaro face”.

This is neither a separate medical condition nor a typical side effect of a medicine on the skin. These are terms used to describe changes in facial appearance that may occur during significant weight loss.

They most commonly relate to:

  • a reduction in the volume of the cheeks,
  • more prominent temples,
  • depressions Valley of Tears,
  • selections nasolabial furrows,
  • loss of a defined facial contour,
  • greater skin laxity,
  • a more tired appearance.

The greater and more rapid the weight loss, the more noticeable these changes may be.

Not every patient will experience these to the same extent. Factors such as age, genetics, the initial condition of the skin, the amount of body fat lost and the rate of weight loss all play a role.

Why do my cheeks suddenly look different?

The face is not a flat layer of skin.

Beneath it lie, amongst other things, layers of adipose tissue, muscles, ligaments and bone structures, which together give it its shape and provide adequate support.

When the volume of fat tissue decreases rapidly, the proportions of the entire face change.

The cheeks may become less full. The temples may appear more sunken. Facial wrinkles become more pronounced, whilst the jawline may lose some of its former softness.

Then there is the skin itself. If it is less elastic, it may take longer to adapt to the new volume of the tissues.

Therefore Weight loss and a loss of facial volume are not always aesthetically neutral.

Ozempic or Mounjaro

Does Mounjaro cause facial wasting?

The simplest answer is: Facial sagging should not be regarded as a direct effect of the medicine.

The changes visible on the face are primarily linked to weight loss and a reduction in body fat.

That is an important distinction.

Mounjaro may support effective weight loss, and facial volume may also change as a result. A similar mechanism may occur during weight loss, regardless of whether the weight loss is achieved through pharmacotherapy.

That is why it is not a question of being afraid of the treatment itself. The point is not to ignore the changes that take place in the skin and tissues throughout the entire process.

Don’t wait until your skin starts to lose its firmness noticeably

When losing weight quickly, it’s easy to focus solely on the number on the scales.

That’s a mistake.

It is not just your figure that changes. The proportions of your whole body, including your face, change.

That is why it is worth paying attention to the condition of your skin – its firmness, hydration and elasticity – whilst you are losing weight. A balanced diet, ensuring your body receives the essential nutrients it needs, and physical activity form the basis of the whole process.

Depending on individual needs, you may also wish to consider professional treatments to improve skin quality and firmness.

The aim is not to halt the effects of weight loss.

The aim is to ensure that the face keeps pace with changes in body shape.

Tight Sculpting™ – skin support during weight loss

One of the treatments that can be used as part of a plan to improve skin quality is laser lipolysis using the platform Fotona DYNAMIS SP. The treatment is designed to improve skin tone and texture and to stimulate regenerative processes collagen.

In practice, this means addressing what often becomes a problem following rapid weight loss – reduced firmness and loss of skin elasticity.

Depending on the condition of the tissues, the treatment may form part of a broader, individually tailored management plan.

Your face doesn’t have to look tired after losing weight

Weight loss For many people, it is a huge step towards better health. However, it is not worth viewing it solely as a battle against the kilos.

The body changes. The face changes too.

It is therefore advisable to ensure that you maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, take regular exercise and look after your skin whilst undergoing treatment. If you experience a loss of volume, skin flaccidity or the deepening of existing furrows; the options for treatment can be assessed on a case-by-case basis during a consultation.

Sometimes, the main priority is to improve the quality of the skin. In other cases, restoring lost volume or combining several methods takes on greater importance.

In the event of a loss of volume in the cheeks, the following options, amongst others, may be considered:. facial volumetrics or cheekbone volume. If the problem concerns the area under the eyes, it may also be helpful to discuss Valley of Tears and the available treatment options.

There is no single treatment that suits every face. What there is, however, is a well-planned course of treatment tailored to the changes that have actually occurred during weight loss.

Don’t let a slimmer figure make your face look older

Don’t wait until your face starts to look like a „side effect” of your weight loss.

If the kilograms are falling off, but along with them the fullness of the cheeks, the firmness of the skin or the fresh appearance of the face have also disappeared, Now is the time to act.
