Ozempic side effects – what do you need to know? How weight loss affects your facial appearance

Side effects of Ozempic

Your weight is going down, but not everything you lose is a cause for celebration. Side effects of Ozempic They are most commonly associated with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation. However, with significant weight loss, the issue of appearance also arises. The face may lose some of its volume, the cheeks may become more sunken, and wrinkles and furrows may become more pronounced. As a result, you may see a face in the mirror that looks more tired and older.

Ozempic includes semaglutide – a substance belonging to the group GLP-1 receptor agonists. The medicine is used to treat type 2 diabetes, and weight loss is one of its effects. Like any medicine, it may cause side effects, which most commonly affect the digestive system.

However, it is worth taking a broader view of the issue. With rapid or significant weight loss, the volume of adipose tissue – which gives the face its natural fullness and provides support for the skin – also decreases. As a result, the cheeks, temples or the area around the jaw may look different, and the face may lose its previous proportions. This phenomenon is associated with the colloquial term Ozempic face – although a similar effect may occur following significant weight loss, regardless of the method used.

More serious side effects of Ozempic

Most of the adverse effects associated with semaglutide is mild or moderate in nature, although there are also situations that require particular attention. In Ozempic documentation Among other things, the text describes the risk of hypoglycaemia in certain drug combinations, problems relating to the gallbladder, and complications associated with diabetic retinopathy.

In 2025, European regulatory authorities also recognised non-ischaemic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) as a very rare adverse reaction to medicines containing semaglutide. In the event of sudden changes in vision, it is essential to contact a doctor immediately.

This does not mean that every patient taking semaglutide will experience such problems. Information on side effects should always be considered in the context of the specific medicine, the dose, the patient’s state of health and any other medicines they are taking.

Ozempic and the face – why might your face look different after losing weight?

Ozempic face It is not the name of a medical condition nor a formal adverse reaction to a medicine. The term is used to refer to changes in facial appearance that may occur during significant weight loss. The phenomenon is therefore not a direct result of semaglutide’s effect on the skin.

When body weight decreases significantly, the amount of subcutaneous fat is also reduced. This also applies to the face. A reduction in volume around the cheeks, temples or lower face can make previously invisible hollows more noticeable.

As a result, the face may appear slimmer, more tired or less full. Some people also find that their wrinkles become more visible and their facial contours less defined.

However, it cannot be said that every person using Ozempic will experience sunken face after weight loss. The extent of the changes depends, amongst other things, on age, initial body weight, the rate of weight loss, individual predispositions, the amount of body fat lost and the condition of the skin.

Loss of facial volume following weight loss

The face does not lose volume in the same way in every patient. Changes may be particularly noticeable around the cheeks, temples, tear troughs and jawline. As the amount of fat tissue decreases, the proportions of the face change, which is why a person may notice that their features have become more defined.

The condition of the skin is also important. As we age, the levels of collagen and elastin – which are responsible, amongst other things, for the skin’s elasticity – naturally decrease. You can find information on the role of these structures in the entries on collagen and elastins.

Following significant weight loss, the skin may need time to adapt to the change in tissue volume. If its elasticity is reduced, signs of sagging may appear, and existing wrinkles may become more noticeable.

Sagging skin after weight loss and fat loss

It is worth distinguishing between two phenomena: loss of facial volume i sagging skin after weight loss. The first is primarily due to a reduction in body fat. The second is linked to the fact that the skin has to adapt to the change in volume of the underlying tissues.

Rapid weight loss does not always lead to noticeable sagging. The extent of sagging depends on an individual’s physical characteristics. Factors such as age, genetics, skin quality, previous fluctuations in weight and the extent of weight loss may all play a role.

That is why the question „How can you prevent your face from looking gaunt after losing weight?” There is no single, universal answer. The most important thing is to manage the weight-loss process properly and have your health monitored by a doctor. It is also worth ensuring you eat a balanced diet, stay well-hydrated, get enough sleep and protect your skin from UV radiation.

How can I improve the appearance of my face after losing weight?

If, after weight reduction it appeared loss of firmness, visible loss of volume or more pronounced wrinkles, Treatment options are selected on a case-by-case basis. There is no single treatment that will be suitable for everyone.

Firstly, the doctor should assess the facial proportions, the condition of the skin and the extent of volume loss. Depending on the problem, methods aimed at improving skin quality and firmness, or treatments to restore volume in specific areas, may be considered.

In the context of improving skin quality, treatments that support collagen remodelling processes are used, amongst other things. You can find more information on this topic under the entry collagen regeneration.

In cases of facial volume loss, the doctor may also consider volumetric treatments. Facial volumetrics It allows selected areas to be contoured and facial proportions to be restored. However, this does not mean that such a procedure is necessary after every significant weight loss.

Is it possible to regain lost facial volume after taking Ozempic?

There is no method that can guarantee, in a natural way, the restoration of exactly the same amount of body fat that was lost during weight loss. However, it is possible to work on facial proportions, skin quality and skin firmness.

In cases of significant loss of volume, your doctor may consider treatments using products used in aesthetic medicine, including hyaluronic acid or tissue biostimulators.

Their use should be preceded by an assessment of the face. Excessive volume enhancement is not always the right solution, particularly when the main problem is skin laxity rather than a lack of volume.

How should you look after your skin whilst losing weight?

The process of weight loss should be tailored to the individual’s state of health and the body’s needs. In the case of pharmacological treatment for obesity or diabetes, medical supervision is required. Ozempic is a prescription-only medicine and is authorised in the European Union for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

It is also worth bearing in mind that other medicines containing semaglutide are used to treat obesity, including Wegovy, which is indicated for weight management in specific groups of patients who are obese or overweight and have comorbidities.

A properly planned weight-loss programme should take into account not only the figure on the scales, but also nutritional status, physical activity and overall physical condition. It may also be helpful to determine BMI and discussing the next steps with your doctor.

Ozempic and the skin ageing process

The changes that become apparent following significant weight loss may be more noticeable in people who previously showed signs of skin ageing. As we age, the skin loses some of its elasticity, and the processes responsible for collagen production slow down.

Therefore, in some people, the reduction in body fat may further highlight pre-existing gravity wrinkles or change the appearance face contour.

However, this does not mean that Ozempic causes facial ageing. The change in appearance is primarily linked to a reduction in tissue volume during weight loss and the body’s individual response.

Don’t ignore the changes that have occurred since you lost weight

Don’t wait until the change you can only see in the mirror today becomes something you simply get used to. If, following significant weight loss, your face has lost volume, your skin has become more saggy, and your wrinkles and facial contours are more pronounced, it’s worth finding out what’s actually causing this change.

During the consultation, the specialist will assess the proportions of your face, the condition of your skin and the extent of volume loss. This is important because volume loss requires a different approach to skin laxity. Only once the problem has been diagnosed can the appropriate procedure – or a combination of several methods – be carefully selected.

At Wellclinic, the treatment plan is tailored to the individual’s facial anatomy, skin condition and desired outcome. Depending on your needs, you may wish to consider procedures that improve skin quality and firmness, or treatments aimed at restoring lost volume.

You don’t have to choose between a slimmer figure and a face you feel comfortable with. If you notice any worrying changes after losing weight, make an appointment for a consultation. The doctor will assess the cause and suggest options tailored to your face. We carry out aesthetic medicine treatments at Wellclinic clinics in Warsaw, Gdańsk and Cracow.
